Alt-Stralau Car Park Toilet, Engelwiese

Public toilet on the riverside path, at the corner of Engelwiese on the island of Alt Stralau, 10245 Berlin

About the event

We eat, digest our food, go to the toilet – and in doing so, we flush valuable nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus down the drain with a lot of water. But what if we could close this cycle again?

In this interactive ‘hop-on’ workshop, you’ll discover how we close the human nutrient cycle and recover valuable resources such as nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Through sensory experiences, quizzes and practical examples, you’ll learn how our current sanitation system works, where the nutrient cycle is disrupted and what alternatives already exist. Dry toilets, separate collection and the processing of waste into recycled fertilisers demonstrate how so-called waste can be turned back into a resource.

Experience the sustainability of circular sanitation systems first-hand at a public dry toilet in Berlin and find out how waste is turned into new nutrients.
